Counseling Session
Questions? You're in the right place.

Here are answers to some of the things people most often ask before getting started. If your question isn't here, reach out anytime.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes! I currently accept health insurance in both states I'm licensed in. In Connecticut, I accept Aetna, Anthem, BCBS MA, Carelon, Optum, United, and Cigna. In Vermont, I accept Aetna, Optum, United, Cigna, and BCBS MA. I also offer self-pay in both states. Insurance can make therapy more affordable, though there are real benefits to self-pay as well (more on that below).

What are the benefits of self-pay instead of using my insurance?

When you use health insurance for therapy, your insurer requires access to your medical records — including your diagnosis, treatment plans, and session notes. For privacy reasons, many of my clients prefer self-pay so this information stays between us. Other benefits include knowing exactly what each session will cost and never worrying about a claim being denied.

What if you don't accept my insurance?

If I don't take your plan, we have a couple of options. You can choose to be a self-pay client, or you can pay out of pocket and I'll provide a monthly superbill that you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement.

What are your current rates?

Initial intakes and follow-up sessions are $150, lasting 50–60 minutes. I also offer 90-minute sessions at $190.

How do I schedule an appointment?

Great question! You can email me at knewcombecounseling@gmail.com or use the "Get in Touch" section of this site. We can set up a no-obligation phone consult or your first appointment — whichever feels right to you.

I've never been to therapy before, and I feel nervous or scared.

You are not alone — this is one of the most universal feelings when starting therapy, and it's completely valid. We'll go at your pace, and you'll never be pushed to talk about anything before you're ready. Therapy is a journey, and we'll walk this one together.

What can I expect in our first session?

Our first session is mostly about getting to know each other. I'll ask about what brings you in, a bit of your history, and what you're hoping for — and you can ask me anything too. There's no pressure to dive into the hardest things right away; we start wherever feels comfortable.

How long will I be in therapy?

That depends entirely on you and your goals — some people come for a specific concern over a few months, others stay longer for deeper work. We'll check in regularly about how things are going and what you need.

Do you offer in-person sessions?

At this time I offer telehealth only. This lets me be flexible and reach more people across Connecticut and Vermont — including those who don't have specialized care nearby. All you need is a private space and an internet connection.
